Effect on body weight

There is no scientific evidence to suggest a link between increase in body weight and the use of the intrauterine system, the intrauterine device or contraceptive implant¹. However, studies have shown that over the first 1-2 years of use of the 3-monthly contraceptive injection, the average weight gain was around 2.3 – 3.6 kg and women completing 4-6 years of therapy gained around 6.4 – 7.5 kg².
