RACHEL
James and I met five years ago at medical school and we’ve just finished gaining our qualifications. We’re now both working extremely long, hard hours to clear our student debts and build successful careers for ourselves. Maybe in a few years when our careers and financial situations are more secure we’d like to settle down and start a family.
The contraception I’m looking for has to be convenient, because I work irregular, long shifts, and it’s got to last a long time because it could take years before we decide to get married and start a family.

NULA
I’ve just started an exciting new job as an account manager at a global PR firm and it’s had a major impact on my lifestyle. There’s lots of last minute travel, endless social functions and I’m constantly networking.
With the way my life is right now starting a family is a goal I would definitely class as long term. I have had relationships in the past that didn’t work out, but I’m optimistic about finding not just a new partner but the right partner.
As I’m often crossing time zones and I’ve suffered from jet lag in the past I need a contraceptive that I can trust. Something I can take and forget about.

You may be a young woman focusing on your studies. Or you may have just started a new job and spend your days travelling to destinations all over the country. Sometimes your work may take you on long-haul flights to destinations in different time zones. You may work hard and play hard and enjoy being able to do what you want. Not getting pregnant for the foreseeable future is very important to you, and while at some stage you would like a family, it’s way off in the future.

When you have a busy lifestyle, remembering to take a pill every day or you or your partner always having condoms available is a risky strategy. So, a long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) may be the perfect choice as it frees you from having to worry about pills or condoms and the fear of getting pregnant at a time when you are focusing on your studies or career. It just needs one administration and you can have between 12 weeks and up to several years of contraceptive protection, depending on the method you choose1,2,3,4.
