Return to fertility with Mirena

Women should be reassured that Mirena has no effect on future fertility and that fertility is restored immediately after removal of the system. It is possible to become pregnant within the first cycle after removal of Mirena1 as cyclical ovarian function can be restored immediately after removal2 and normal menstrual bleeding can return within the first month2.

Several studies have shown that the chances of getting pregnant after removal of Mirena are very high, with the 12-month cumulative conception rate being as high as 96%3,1,4,5. The pregnancy rates are similar to those observed after the removal of a Cu-IUD 3,1.
